A surge in net-zero commitments has propelled the voluntary carbon offset market into record territory in 2021, with four months still to go in the year.
Through August 2021, projects listed on the four major voluntary carbon offset registries (Verra, Gold Standard, Climate Action Reserve, American Carbon ) have issued more than 225 million offsets. This is more than double the 112 million offsets issued in 2020 through August and 21% higher than the 185 million offsets issued through all of 2020.
A fast increasing number of companies using the voluntary carbon offset market as an instrument to neutralize their hard-to-abate emissions. A possible supply deficit would drive offset prices up.
