Only around a quarter of all bulkers and tankers will be EEXI complaint

Simpson Spence Young (SSY), London-based broker, delivers statistics on what the upcoming regulation of the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) would imply for the bulker and tanker fleets at a global level. The two environmental measures, agreed upon by International Maritime Organization (IMO) member states this June, are set to come into law in 2023.

SSY cautioned that under 25% of bulkers and tankers will achieve EEXI compliance. This in turn will have a huge impact on most of the world’s commerce fleet as they will face engine power restriction (EPL) choices or another types of CO 2 abatement regulations.
