The report released in September 2021 by the European Environment Agency and the Maritime Safety Agency showed an increase in total greenhouse emissions from the maritime sector. This increase in the emissions is far higher than the expected emissions.
According to the report, maritime emissions contribute 14% to the total greenhouse emissions from the European transport sector while road vehicles emissions account for 71% of the emissions. Moreover, the report also reflects that maritime industry is the third biggest contributor of the greenhouse emissions from the European transport sector after road vehicles and the aviation industry.
To achieve the targets of European Green Deal carbon neutrality, a necessary imminent and sustainable transition in the maritime industry is need.
